As a CNHC registrant you are required to participate in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to maintain your registration. In this article, we take a look at the requirements you must meet, CNHC’s “reflective practice” approach, what activities count towards your CPD and how to record it.

What is CPD?

CPD is defined as “a range of learning activities through which professionals grow and develop throughout their careers to ensure that they retain their capacity to practise safely, effectively and legally within their evolving scope of practice”.

How many hours of CPD do I have to complete?

If you are registered for one discipline you must complete a minimum of 15 hours CPD each year, of which 10 hours must be directly relevant to the discipline for which you are registered. The other 5 hours may be more general learning to support your overall development as a professional practitioner.

If you are registered for more than one discipline, you must complete at least 10 hours CPD directly related to each discipline plus an additional 5 hours of general learning.

You must complete a range of CPD activities, with no more than a third of the total CPD hours spent on any single activity in one year.

What is “reflective practice”?

CNHC considers reflective practice, that is, how you observe and record what you are learning and then put your learning into practice, an essential element of your CPD. You should:

  • Identify your learning needs and how you will meet them
  • Reflect on what you have learned
  • Look at how you will feed this learning back into your work
  • Review what you have done and identify any new learning points.

What counts towards CPD?

It’s not just attendance at courses, conferences or other training events that count as CPD. Activities such as day to day research into issues related to individual clients, reading relevant professional journals, case reviews with colleagues, receiving supervision or mentoring, work shadowing, or participating in research projects are all acceptable. For a full list, see our Continuing Professional Development Policy

How to record your CPD?

You must keep an up-to-date log of all relevant CPD undertaken for every year of your registration. When deciding what to include you should consider whether you learned something new which you can put into practice in your work.

We have produced a CPD log sheet template for you to use.

When it is time for you to renew your registration, you will be asked if you have completed the required CPD.

From time to time, we carry out a CPD audit from a random sample of CNHC registrants. If you are included in a random sample, you will be required to provide a copy of your completed CNHC CPD log sheet for your last full registration year.
