CNHC is the UK register for complementary healthcare practitioners that was set up in 2008 with government funding and support. Our key purpose is to protect the public.
We hold a UK register of complementary health practitioners who have met UK standards. CNHC registrants work in private practice, the NHS and a wide range of other health and care settings.
We have a Board of Directors made up of nine people in total. Five of these are lay people (not practitioners from our register) and four are CNHC registrants. Profession Specific Boards (PSBs):
We also have a Profession Specific Board (PSB) for each of the disciplines we register. Each PSB has up to four members – all are practitioners registered with CNHC for the relevant discipline. PSBs provide advice to the CNHC Board about therapy-specific issues and are a key element of CNHC’s structure. Appointments to the current PSBs are by means of elections managed by CNHC.
We also have a Professional Committee which includes a pool of mainly lay individuals. We draw on members of this pool for our Investigating, Professional Conduct & Competence and Health Panels. Professional Committee members have been recruited through a process of external advertising and selection.
We have a small staff team to carry out the day-to-day work. Currently, these are:

CNHC is the holder of an Accredited Register by the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care, the independent government-appointed body that oversees and scrutinises the work of the nine statutory medical, health and care regulators. These include the General Medical Council (GMC), the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC). Since March 2012 the Authority has also been able to accredit registers of health and care occupations that are not regulated by law and CNHC has successfully completed this process.
A joint report from the Royal Society for Public Health and the Professional Standards Authority, Untapped Resources: Accredited Registers in the Wider Workforce, highlighted that “Practitioners registered with CNHC support public health by encouraging their clients to make a range of lifestyle changes. These include improvements to diet and nutrition, support with giving up smoking and losing weight, support with reducing stress, improving sleep, managing pain and other symptoms, as well as overall enhancements to wellbeing. All CNHC registrants are committed to enhancing the UK public’s health and wellbeing.”
